12:51 One year on

A year ago today the second, and this time devastating, big earthquake hit Christchurch city. I really don’t think there’s an awful lot I can say that wouldn’t sound trite. Oddly today the rain is just pouring down in Wellington, which matches my mood when I think about it.

But there is also hope. That the rebuild will get started, that people will have decent homes to live in, businesses to run, that the bureaucrats and insurance companies remember that at the heart of all this are people. We can rebuild a city, but we also have to ensure the people that still there are able to cope.

Many have moved on, many have coped, but many are still struggling. I know in my heart I would have left rather than face the never ending aftershocks.

The ones who have stayed deserve better than they are getting.
