Brilliant Wellington Hairdresser.

Well, Ive just been for my quarterly trim, and thought it was probably about time to write about this – as I think I may have the best hairdresser in Wellington.

Now, while I will happily save money on just about anything – there are three things in life that I do not buy cheap: Shoes, Bras and Haircuts. I may buy less of them, but that where I spend the bucks. Which is why I still have shoes I bought 20 years ago (though I would like to point out – not bras!)

When I first came to Wellington 6 years ago – I had no idea where to start looking for a hairdresser. I plumped for Bouy Hairdressing for 2 reasons: one of Hubby’s co-workers recommended them, and they were in the Majestic Centre which was opposite where we lived.

That was a mistake.

My hair at the time was quite a bit longer than it is now, and I needed to good trim to get rid of split ends and generally tidy it up. I think I may have lost a split end or 2, but basically I came out looking as rough as I went in to be honest. So I was a bit wary of trying anyone else.

Then a few months later, hubby got his job at Unisys, and the company offered a few perks to people, including a discount for George Janis Hairdressers (no longer available)- a local chain with salons throughout the city. I figured I may as well try one, and plumped for the salon on Queens Wharf . As I had no idea who the stylists were I just booked with a senior stylist and hoped for the best.

That turned out to be a bloody good call.

The hairdresser was Suzanne, a lovely bubbly Irish lass. Turns out she had trained with Toni And Guy in Ireland – which was great – as thats where I used to go in the UK and just loved the way they cut long hair (It may look simple – but actually getting a good cut on long hair can often end in disaster!). She persuaded me to get a good few inches lopped off – and I haven’t looked back since.

Since then Suzanne has cut my hair and it’s length has gone from long to a short bob and back again, depending on how I feel at the time. She is honestly the first hairdresser I have trusted to do more than a tiny trim in many many years (Id probably have to go back to my years living in Hereford). My mum also goes to her, and again always comes out looking really good.

The salon is no longer part of the George Janis Group – it is now called Calibre, but Suzanne is still there. I’ve also had my hair coloured there, though due to the cost it’s not something I do very often at the salon – much as I would like to.  I really think this is a gem of a salon. I’ve recommended it to a few people before and that have also been thrilled with it. I am now paying $97 for a cut, compared with $105 for a cut in the only Toni & Guy salon in the country which is in Auckland. So perhaps not cheap, but certainly worth every cent.

  2. I agree with everything Helen as said. Whilst doing our 6 monthly trips from UK to here I had two hairdressers. One in the UK (Toni & Guys in Carlisle) and Suzanne in Wellington. Now it is not often you get two good hairdressers never mind two that like each others work, but they both liked the way my hair was being cut!! But then both Toni & Guy trained so I had good haircuts wherever I was. When you are having a hard day Suzanne will always cheer you up and you come out of the salon feeling a lot better.

  4. Well how spooky! I was just talking about Suzanne yesterday.
I’m finding it more and more difficult to get down to her, we used to joke I was the only client who flew in for a cut.
So, I thought I’d try a local place. I picked a random salon out of the phone book and went on Friday. The stylist asked me about my hair (like they do) and I was telling him about Suzanne (how she was T&G trained, singing her praises etc) and it turned out he used to work there and knows her, RJ and Craig. He did his training at GJ and she taught him how to cut the Rachel style, when it was in fashion.
I hope you used your $10 voucher ;)

  6. Which just goes to show once more that this really is a small world :) I am SO glad you found a great alternative – and Ill let Suzanne and the other know.

And yes – for once I actually got to use my voucher – I usually time my appointments so badly I don’t get to us them.

    Which is a good point:

You generally get a $10 voucher at Christmas for use in January, and often one for your birthday as well if you tell them when it is. From memory T&G did this as well in Carlisle.

    Hugs

    Hxxx

  8. Thank you for posting these threads. I moved to Wellington from the States and looking for a local hair stylist. I would love to know the name of the salon and the hair stylist in Deborah’s, 15 Jan, 2011 post. Thanks very much. Lana
