Changes to AvalonsGuide on the way.
As its still absolutely chucking it down in Wellington, meaning we aren’t going for a nice long walk around the bay, or heading to one of the beaches for a nice coffee, we have decided to get our butts in gear and make some changes to the website.
Ive been trying to get this done for a while now, and even have a proper Amazon.co.uk aStore ready to go – but it does require the tech wizarding skills of Hubby to get a load of this done. Apparently the aStore requires changes to the CSS file – and I don’t even know what a CSS file is – let alone how to change it! Blogging is great as long as all you need to do is sput forth with your opinions – but as soon as you need to do something – Argghhh!
So anyway – feel free to comment and let me know if theres things that you particularly don’t like about any of the changes we make – cos I’m happy to bear them in mind as the website evolves.

Ok – a few hours into this and theres a fairly constant stream of mumbled swearing coming from Hubby as he gets to grip with trying to force the Book Store into the blog and change the theme.
We are having “comfort breaks” consisting of Top Gear Challenges to try and keep him sane, and prevent him hurling the Laptop off the 6th Floor balcony into the huge puddle that is Wellington today.
Todays funny quote from Top Gear just for humour value:
Richard Hammond: [on the Morris Marina that James is driving] I’ll guarantee that nothing exciting, vibrant, dynamic, new, creative, hopeful or beneficial in any way to humanity has ever been done, thought of or driven to in that drab, dreary, entirely beige, wilfully awful pile of misery.
mutter, mumble, cuss, IE8, heap of crap, mutter mumble
Nearly there
Tidied a lot of things up, moved some stuff around, got the Amazon Store up and running (though its not actually working quite right, so hubby is currently still muttering and mumbling and generally using a lot of “colourful” language. )
Still, things are looking a little bit fresher
You asked for it, you get it ![]()
Here are some comments regarding upcoming changes to your website. (Haven’t noticed any yet, though).
What I like now:
your commentary; most of the topics you pick; that you have a clear point of view; the fact that your blog is regularly updated.
What I dislike now:
the clutter in the right half, especially the ads (but I have learned to simply ignore them).
What changes I would strongly dislike:
if the website changed focus from being info+commentary to adopting a hard-sell approach, i.e. if its main purpose became promoting your book.
The dosage is just about right as it is now. More would defeat the purpose, IMHO.
You should already see the changes
Ive listed them all in a post this morning, but basically the point was to reduce that clutter – so hopefully Ive managed that
I was looking at a different setup to try and reduce it even more, but I got stuck – everything I looked at actually ended up increasing the clutter
Im afraid the ads have to stay, as does the ad for selling the book – since thats kinda the whole point of the blog originally. It was never intended to be a blog as it is now – it only became that when INZ London right royally pissed me off lol. In fact originally it was called “Avalon’s Not-a- Blog” and it was just supposed to be a place to bung in some updates to the book. During the weekend I actually looked at a cache of the old website – oh my – the difference!
(I wonder if INZ have learned not to Piss people off yet lol)
So yeah – hopefully I have the balance right – but the ads (and the New Amazon store) have to stay – because it does cost money to run these things, and I cant afford to run it forever without a little bit of income.
On the plus side – I can put your mind at rest that you wont get any hard sell. I personally hate it – and while its VERY common in New Zealand (cos it works) Id rather boil my head in a Vat of acid that use the cringeworthy Internet marketing tactics doing the rounds here {{Shudders}}.
Tell me what you're thinking...
