Only in New Zealand: The Prime Minister auctions a doodle.

To cut a long and very complex story short – the Flag of New Zealand is always a topic of argument and occasional news, because it contains a Union Jack and some people hate to be reminded of a colonial past. So John Key, our Prime Minister went on Breakfast TV this morning and doodled his preferred alternative. Its supposed to be a Silver Fern by the way:  Flag Doodle

And it is now being auctioned on Trade Me to raise money for charity.

How cool is that?

Can you imagine Gordon Brown doing that?

  2. God help us if this sort of tacky, gimmicky rugby-ish thing ever becomes the basis of our national flag. Canada has done the *leaf* thing so much better than anyone else . Let’s not go there.

Why oh why can’t people just leave the flag issue alone. The present one is just fine. The vast majority of New Zealanders are of British heritage, so what’s so very wrong in acknowledging that fact in a small corner of our flag? Nothing.. I say.

Leave the flag as it is, and consign John Key’s pathetic artistic endeavours to the rubbish bin.

  4. I’m genuinely split on this issue. On the one hand – I like the fag we have and don’t want it to change. On the other hand I can see why other people are so adamant that they don’t like it. As an English person who is one of many sick to death at being told we cant fly a St George Cross because it might offend people – I can see why many Kiwis (whether Maori or not) feel strongly about this.

As a brit, I also highly object to having the European Union Flag flown in Britain, so again – I can kinda see why this is important for people.

As to what the flag should be? No idea. But I think while I like the flag chosen by Maori to fly at Waitangi – the fact that it is associated with a political party makes it a really bad idea. It had better be better than that doodle :)
