What a “True Kiwi” thinks of Immigrants.

This came in as a comment, and while I have left in place under the post it refers to, I thought it deserved a blog all to itself, as a reflection of some of the ignorance you can face as a migrant. This attitude is obviously not confined to New Zealand, but given that its actually damn difficult to migrate here, and people like this just have no conception of how much we have to prove ourselves – I thought it was interesting just how little “True Kiwi’s” understand about their own immigration policy. Quite what this persons rant has to do with the IAA situation I have no idea -but hey.

I’d hate to be honest with you my friend but you have a problem with immigration. And I’m happy about this. I would rather see your brother not get into New Zealand. I was born in New Zealand and most of my community (or those that can be considered true kiwi’s) believe that it is immigrants that destroy my country. You feed off the Goverment and you love the fact that New Zealand allows you benefits that your country did not offer you. You will offer nothing back to this country. I have sat here and watched imigrants come into my country and complain that we are underdeveloped and completley judge our ways of life. You migrants need to realise that you may be in New Zealand but if you are to come into our country you need to stop complaining otherwise pack your bags and go home. Because if you have a problem with our laws (as you are stating above) then why are you here? Why would you come to New Zealand? You anger me emensly with your complaints and I am sick of hearing about people like you.

No Shit Sherlock – I’ve got a problem with immigration – bright aren’t you?

I hate to be honest with you “friend” but you are talking out of your arse.

While you are quite within your rights to hate immigrants – for no other reason than we are “immigrants” – you need to understand that if we all buggered off back to where we came from – your country would collapse in on itself. You would lose skills “True Kiwis” don’t have, you would lose all our money – without which your economy would collapse, and your population would go into terminal decline because so many “True Kiwis” hate New Zealand and can’t wait to leave and go somewhere else.

Fact is “Friend” – your lot don’t like this place much either Wink

And please – stop talking shite about how us “immigrants” offer nothing to “your” country. You are probably entirely ignorant of this – as of so much else, but we need to prove ourselves to your government over and over. A damn site more than you would have to do if you wanted to leave this place. New Zealand has one of the toughest immigration policies in the world – and while that is a good thing – it does mean that if we have proven good enough to get through – you sure as hell are not in position to be rude about what we offer “Your” country. The fact is we offer a lot more than most Kiwis – otherwise we would not be allowed in.

You may hate the fact that other races get to live in “your” country – but that’s your problem, and your ignorance and racism – it does not diminish the vast benefits New Zealand gets from immigration – or the fact that you need us.

And about the benefits “your” country offers us that we don’t get back home. You are once again showing your enormous ignorance. The UK offers us free healthcare  – of a much higher standard that the not quite so free NZ system – and benefits that are way in excess of what New Zealand can offer it’s bludgers. You on other hand can go and sponge of the (free) UK health and benefits system if you wanted to and do much better than you would here. My parents and brother are not entitled to any benefits in New Zealand for the first 2 years that they are residents. If they needed it – we have to support them. I guess the two years means that we will all have given enough to “your” country that we have finally been deemed worthy of your paltry benefits system. This is of course on top of the five years “your” country has already had of our skills and money of – paying for “true kiwis” to bludge off our taxes.

If we were after benefits – we would indeed have stayed in the UK. Of course as a “True Kiwi” you seem to be of the opinion that anything New Zealand could offer has to be way better than anything from any other country. Sometimes that is the case – often it’s not. Get over it – New Zealand doesn’t always have the best of everything.

It says much about you that your first thought of anyone is that they want to bludge off the state. Why? Is that what you do? Why would you think that I would want my family to come to a country and be so dirt poor that they would need handouts from the state? I can support my own family thank you. And “your” country lets them in because “your” country wants their money. Do you really feel so proud of yourself now?

And yes – I have a problem with one of your laws –I will not go into that – as I really don’t think you are capable of understanding – the information is all there if you actually want to read it. I am a New Zealand citizen – and I can damn well object to being refused the right to free speech if I want to. If you don’t like that – YOU move to a country where I am not allowed to speak out.

You have shown you and your “Community” of “True Kiwis” to be entirely racist and ignorant – and thankfully you are not the voice of the Kiwi’s I know of, who would be embarrassed by your shitty and backward attitude.

Besides – what the hell do you – in your unbelievable arrogance – consider a “True Kiwi” anyway? Do you have the faintest idea how stupid you are are if you think there is any such thing anywhere anymore?

If you want to make any further comments on my blog – please read This Post first.

Edited to add:

Via the magic of WordPress – I can tell you that  ”True Kiwi” got to my site via a google search using the term “Im a migrant and I hate new zealand”. My blog came up at the IAA post because it contained the term “I am a migrant”. So it looks like  ”True Kiwi” was just looking to have a racist rant about immigrants, and my blog just got in his path. Sad Git.

I guess Im lucky to have really nice Kiwi friends :)

  10. FUNNY! Yup, I think this is hilarious! Reading “Friend”‘s comments I was getting cross, then your response pretty much hit the nail on the head, phew! ‘Benefits our country doesn’t give’ us, indeed! HA! Free Doctors, pretty much free dentists, free eye exams … Plenty of my Kiwi friends who lived in the UK took full advantage of the NHS system when they lived there, getting things done for free which would have cost them an arm and a leg over here before they left the UK! AND the longer I live here the more I note how many immigrants are working in positions of note – I have often wondered what would happen if we all left, where would NZ be then??!! I take comfort from the fact that this “friend” is NOT the normal Kiwi attitude…, he is the one that is holding the country back. Pah!

  12. I know exactly how you feel :) I too went from amused to angry to furious and back to amused again. I think as with many things – you have to try and see the funny side.

For me that only comes after anger – I get crap from people like this – and people on some on the forums because I wont say everything in New Zealand is “100% Pure”, and yet I get crap from some people for being “Happy Clappy” and showing New Zealand in too good a light.

At the end of the day I can only tell what “I” see. The good, the bad and the indifferent.

Unfortunately people like our firend above dont understand that when they rant at me like this- they show the worst of New Zealand themselves – and show the world that Kiwis are not all friendly, open minded and welcoming. Most are – but like with eveything else – theres a mix. I assume the irony escapes the people like our friend whoc just want to rant for the sake of having a go at someone.

  14. It is true that migrants have to prove themselves to be able to move here and come here and yes, I wish immigration didn’t make it so hard for people to share their experiences with others.

However, in a way I can perhaps see where this person is also coming from (I’m an immigrant too so by the way). I have met many immigrants who come here and they do nothing but complain (and that irritates the heck out of me). They refuse to even try to fit in. I’ve had people say the food all taste bad, people who live here are all rude and horrible, it is cold and miserable and they will go out of their way to only mix with their own people. I’ve had people boasting about how much better they are than the Kiwi’s and they say things like “we are taking over”. Unfortunately they are the ones who create a bad reputation for other migrants who truly want to come and make this place our home.

I do know that not all Kiwis are like this person who left the comment as I’ve met many really wonderful Kiwis, just as I know that not all migrants do the whole complain thing (however I have met more migrants who do the complain thing than Kiwis do the whole “stop whinging” thing).

Unfortunately it might just be a case of a few create a bad reputation and then they spoil it for all of us and as people do they sometimes generalise.

  16. Some fair and very true points there Lea :) Its an absolute truth that a few people tend to have crappy attitudes and others get tarnished by them.

Its also true that by and large, as a white british immigrant, Ive noticed i tend to get less grief than all (and I mean all) my non white, non british immigrant friends.

We cant really avoid generalisation – which is why I try so hard to present both the good and the bad. I love living in New Zealand – but that doesnt mean I can agree with everything i see going on here. I just dont understand how noticing bad things means we should bugger off back we came from.

And personally – i would be horrified too by anyone claiming to be better than a Kiwi. Many of us have different skills – thats fair enough – but we cant possibly claim to be better people than New Zealanders. Thats just plain wrong.

  22. I think Kiwis have a right to tell you where to go actually. They’re not merely “immigrants” as you put it, they’re conquerers and took what is now their country by force!
    Did you? I think not.

Besides, this whole “i’m an immigrant, but so are you” argument is flawed.
Would you go to an Amerindian and say “I’m an immigrant but so are you!” to them because they arrived from Asia?
No because the “your an immigrant too” comeback only goes so far – about 2 generations back at the most can you apply that simple logic.

So please refrain from comparing yourself to people who’s ancestors fought for the country they live in and have been there a lot longer than you – your not comparable to them.

  28. As a NZ expat it really seems to me like NZ is becoming ever more backward in its attitudes and I think it is mainly due to the brain drain and the notion amongst the female populace that having a family is a failure.

I would often point out to the people who had a problem with migrants daring to find a fault in NZ, that they themselves were the kiwis always whinging about NZ. And it was ALWAYS the case, the same negative behaviour.
The fact is that NZ needs migrants and would even if it wasn’t for its shortcomings in wages, housing and opportunities causing a situation where more than 1 million nationals now live overseas. The migrants both plug the gaps in skills shortages and do the jobs Kiwis don’t want to do. I can honestly say that the migrants I worked amongst before leaving NZ were the best people to work with with clearly more professional ethics.

And why does the opinion of a migrant cause these sorts of people so much distress? they’re not obliged to listen to it. Are they afraid they might be shown up as ignorant? are they afraid of learning something?

I think people like your ugly correspondent need to take a good hard look at themselves and the chip they clearly have on their shoulder, otherwise they’ll one day have much more important things to whinge about, mark my words.

  30. While I agree with almost everything you said in that post and am ashamed to be in the same country as that “True Kiwi”, there was one thing you said that that offended me. That was: “Fact is “Friend” – your lot don’t like this place much either”.
What is that supposed to mean? Are you seriously trying to say that no one really likes New Zealand? Because that is ridiculous.
I was born a New Zealander, but I’ve had the privelidge of living in various other coutries over the years. Now that I have returned to New Zealand, I still am proud to call it home.
Perhaps I am overly patriotic and not representitive of society, but I don’t think so. I love my country even though I know it is not perfect and I know that many others do as well, both people who were born here and immigrants who are now New Zealanders themselves.
No country is without problems and every country will contain at least a few morons like our friend here, but that is no excuse for saying something so insulting to an entire nation. I hope that it was just your understandable anger speaking and not an actual belief of yours, or there could be something very worrying going on here.

  31. Avalon on Fri, 30th Apr 2010 10:55 am
  32. Gosh No Bob, I am certainly not suggesting for a moment that all Kiwi’s hate New Zealand. I am sorry that the way I said it caused offense.

This is something that comes up a lot in discussions over Immigration. I imagine it is the same in most countries – but obviously my own personal experience is based here in NZ. People like “True Kiwi” (and some other Immigrants) believe that if I as a migrant dislike anything at all about the country I moved to – I need to get on a plane and leave.

The problem is here certainly – that the vast majority of people getting on that plane, are Kiwis – not immigrants. ( I Think I have a post here somewhere with the numbers).

About 45,000 immigrants arrive in NZ each year. Most years that just about replaces the Kiwis that have left becuase they they don’t like living in NZ. Not many of that number leaving are Immigrants that hate the place.

I do hope that puts your mind at rest. I have been told so many times, by so many people to bugger off back where I came from becuase I am prepared to say there are things here that concern me. Incidentally – most of them affect everyone here – not just Immigrants. It a stupid suggestion, and ignores the very real problem that Kiwi’s are leaving their country in droves.

You are right to be proud, and I am the last person who would ever condemn you for being Patriotic! Even though I have a Kiwi passport – I will always be English, and I will always miss where I came from, even if Im in no hurry to bugger off back :)

    Hxxx

  34. Avalon you are obviously a tosser, Kiwis leave nz because of better wages, not because they don’t like NZ. Yes some of us don’t like immigration. I like our small population. And that comment you obviously took from America about immigrants doing the jobs Kiwis don’t wanna do?? Ever seen an Asian person on the road works?? I bet you’ve seen a Kiwi cleaning up rubbish on the street though you arrogant little creature. And why post that letter anyway? trying to fuel the fire perhaps? Is it not possible he hates white immigrants too? as Brits can be just as judging of New Zealanders. My mother is an immigrant to this country, but unlike a very large amount of immigrants, she worked and payed taxes and never complained.

  35. Avalon on Sun, 29th Aug 2010 9:41 am
  36. Well Rory, you really aren’t showing the best side of Kiwi’s there calling me a “Tosser”. And you are also wrong, whether its wages, the “corrupt” government, racism, crap education, high cost of living there are in fact a LOT of things a LOT of Kiwis dont like about New Zealand,

And no – I haven’t seen an Asian on the road crews, but then Ive not seen any white people on road crews either. Why is that??? But then where I do see Asians is cleaning up after whites and Maoris. Why is that???

Why post the comment – for the same reason Im letting yours through, even though it is just as rude, nasty and ignorant, and just as clearly made to cause trouble: becuase people need to see that not everyone in New Zealand is nice and fluffy,- which is unfortunately what a lot of potential immigrants think. I thought I had explained that – perhaps you just did understand?

And really – your mum paid taxes “unlike a very large amount of immigrants”. You really don’t get that most other immigrants work hard and pay taxes??? They are only worthwhile immigrants if they happen to be your mum??? This is the kind of shitty attitude that people coming here need to be aware of. Mercifully – as you can see from the other comments – its rare, but this kind of ignorance is all around.

Thank you for illustrating the point :)

  48. You dont know me at all. You are ignorant and you ARE racist and you clearly have a huge problem with immigration. Which is not in itself a problem -your dishonesty though is.. You may not see colour ( you do however hear Kiwi accents and somehow think they are British – which is completley wrong) – but you have a huge chip on your shoulder.

I am not a guest in “your” country – I have earned the right to be here – it sure as hell wasnt given by any god. If you have a problem with that – it’s yours to deal with – not mine. I hope you grow up one day and learn some basic humanity and decency.

Yes – there are brits in almost every country in the world – what is your point? There are also Kiwis in all countries of the world. You do know that don’t you?

New Zealand is in pain today – seeing your nasty comment today has really disgusted me, and I hope you are ashamed of yourself. I doubt you will be though :(
