Well, thats a different immigration policy!
Tip of the hat to: MaoriInspiration on Twitter.
The Cook Islands Government has introduced a new policy saying that permanent residents must be able to speak conversational Maori.
The Committee said the requirement is consistent with policies in New Zealand and Australia where applicants need to meet a standard of English language before they can acquire permanent residency or citizenship.

I have to say – I think this is quite cool. Might make emigrating there hard – but hey – its there country and they can insist that new residents are able to speak with the current ones. I wonder if – like the New Zealand “rule” about having to speak English – you can get round it by buying a Language course – whether or not you have any intention of actually studying it?
