Rimutaka Upgrade is on the way (apparently).
Well – what do you know. Apparently we are going to get the next upgrade on the road starting anytime now. It will be a pain with the roadworks, but after the last lot of upgrades, and how much better it has made the journey into Wellington – I am personally more than happy to put with the delays for a few years to get a straighter road.
Just take a look at the plan!

Oh goodie – another fast road for Kiwi drivers to kill themselves on. Seriously it’s been about 50 years overdue!
This is great. I’m very happy they’re fixing it finally. This road was a huge hurdle for me in deciding to move out to the Wairarapa, because it scared the bejesus out of me! Read my post – Conquering the road that scared me.

I think even with this it will still be a barrier for a lot of people. And at the end of the day – its one that probably keeps house prices fairly low here.
Oddly enough – the best thing for me personally is that staightening the road will actually stop me feeling so ick when we go over it. Most of the time ist fine – but just occasionally – It can make me feel quite nauseus
It worries me a little that the main reason for the councils wanting this is to make the journey faster – rather than making it safer. A touch hipocritical of them I think. I know we dont need a faster journey – just an easier one!
Interestingly enough Google Earth still has an old photo showing what the road used to look like, before the lower part around Maymorn got straightened out.
And this is why they’re finally straightening out the road.
Tell me what you're thinking...
