How difficult is it to get proper orange juice in NZ?

orangesQuite difficult it seems if you start by calling it Simply Squeezed, when it isn’t squeezed juice. This is something that has always bugged us since we got here: just how difficult can it be to get proper squeezed orange juice in a country that can grow oranges. Simply Squeezed is a brand of juices you can buy in the supermarkets here, and they are in court for misleading advertising (and about time too!).

Apparently what has got them in trouble is that they advertised on TV last year that 100% of their orange came from Hawkes Bay, whereas they actually use fruit from Pakistan as well. They are also in trouble for advertising to hotels that their juice is “100% squeezed juice”.

We haven’t bought Simply Squeezed, because we tend to read labels, and the nutrition label actually shows that they also use concentrate. Instead – we buy Charlies – whose labels show that it is really, honestly proper orange juice without any of this concentrate rubbish.

Simply Squeezed is quoted in the paper as saying “we pride ourselves on delivering to our customers the best-tasting chilled juices”. They do not however seem to pride themselves on honest labelling.

  2. You remind me to compare NZ advertising standards with the UK’s. I think it’s a huge area starting with TV advertising, labelling, radio and so-called offers.

  4. So called offers – ? what you mean that when a hotel advertises a rate of $700 per night for a room, and they’re offering a wonderful discount down to $79.99, that’s not a real discount? Surely not! ;)

  6. Yes, That sort of thing.

In the UK prices must be at a certain level for so long before a discount can be called an offer, or a saving.

I wonder what the NZ equivalent is?

  8. Probably dont have to look further than Briscoes :) The claim the RRP of the coffee machine I bought was $899 but I couldnt find it listed anywhere else for more than $549, and bought it from Moore Wilson at $499 whcih is what Brisoces was claiming as a huge sale discount !

The Briscoes “sale” has to be the biggest load of advertising nonsence out there.

  10. Re Juice

The Charlies juice that you prefer is pastuerised and no longer has the real “honest” flavours that it claims (it is well knwon in the industry that pastuerisation removes flavours, and changes the products consistency)

the only thing really honest about it is the word honest..its stored ambient, shipped ambient and sold chilled to fool the consumer

  12. Theres always one :) Yeah – they fooled me (not).

The Charlies website is actually 100% upfront about the fact that they pasteurise their juice ( my oversigght for not realising I would have to be pedantic and mention it rather than a sign that Charlies are trying to diddle thier customers). The Simply Squeezed website says absolutley nothing except “Simply Squeezed”. To be fair – this blog post was not about what constitutes good orange juice (in my personal opinion all the stuff sold in NZ supermarkets is rubbish – unless you go to Moore Wilsons in Wellington and get the stuff they squeeze in front of you) – but anout advertsising that is so often absolutely false in New Zealand.

I do not actually “prefer” Charlies – I prefer Moore Wilsons – I happen to buy charlies because I can get it locally, and from the limited range it is better than buying “Orange Juice” that is actually watered down concentrate with sugar added to it.

So I apologise for not being clearer in my post – I did not mean to confuse you :)
