As ever, when NZ does stuff, it has to be ‘extreme’ in some way.
Risking life & limb when driving up & down a mountain to get to work.

Whether there are barriers or not it seems that Transit wouldn’t blink and eye if there was a hole in the fence. They’d simply mend it. This is what happened when the guy who drove over the side on New Year’s Day and didn’t get found till 5 months later. My neighbour works for the fire service and was part of the the eventual rescue crew when they finally spotted the wreckage after a pilot had a hunch and went looking when he happened to be passing that way.

So the morale is barrier or no barriers if you come off the Rimutaka Hill you can be sure that help won’t be coming in a hurry. I take great delight in slowing down the traffic on the hill. Having had a near miss with an overtaking maniac I don’t take any risks now.

You know what – I had honestly never thought of it like that! I just assumed it was a good idea to have proper barriers, but oddly enough – I can see exactly what you mean.

There is some discussion about whether crash barriers make a driver feel safer and therefore more likely to crash.

Those sheep fences you have in your photographs might actually be the most advanced form of saftey device known to science.

God knows the average kiwi driver requires very little encouragement to tail-gate or put the foot to the floor. And the safer he/she feels the worse it will become.
