Cirque Du Soleil comes to New Zealand.

We took a trip to the sprawling metropolis that is Auckland (well, to those of us not used to living there it’s a metropolis – to everyone else it’s a small city). I don’t generally enjoy Auckland, but that’s mostly because I’m used to Wellington and really like it – so Auckland just seems so BIG to me.

But it’s a fact of life in New Zealand that if you want to go to concerts and shows – you will generally have to make the trip up there – very little makes its way to the capital, and even less to other cities.

That’s possibly good for my budget – there are several concerts this year I would have gone to if it had been easier to get there.

But one I refused to miss was Cirque Du Soleil, who brought their Dralion Show to Auckland. It was well worth the money spent – not just on the ticket price, but on the flights and accommodation.

I’ve seen three shows now: Quidam, Allegria and now Dralion. And it is a relief that Cirque Du Soleil are not the type of company to insist that Kiwis should have to travel to Australia to see them.

I think this was my favourite. We had a stunning view – right in front of the stage and with no one sat in front of me (which is always a fear as I’m so ridiculously short), because there was an aisle in front of us.

The show was pure magic. A fantasy tale mixing the elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth. I don’t think it could have been more perfect for me if they had written it specially. Their shows are always awe-inspiring – but this was just perfect. Especially when the “Dralion” (a cross between a Dragon and a Lion) came running up the aisle in front of us.

If you can get the opportunity to go and see this – I really recommend it. It is a night you wont forget for a long time.

PS: Thanks to Sal for the hint about the traffic. We left the centre of Auckland and 6.15, got to the show ground and 6.45 and missed the queues. Getting out was a bit trickier .

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency in the city center – $175 for a one  bed suite which was absolutely stunning. The bed was huge and really comfy, we had not one but two flat screen TVs, a huge sofa, and a rather swanky bathroom.

Dralion runs until August 23rd at Alexandra Park Showgrounds.
