If Only.

We finished our last Think and Grow Rich group on Friday, which was not only a blast, but as we ended the night with a really good Chinese meal at Amazing 5 in Lower Hutt, it was also a fantastic evening to end the course on.

As a group we have worked our way through Napoleon Hills book, and spent time on building our own goals, and writing our visions for the future lives we want. This is something that Hill’s book actually teaches you to do step by step, and can be a very powerful tool for people who know they want to achieve big things – but have trouble getting started.

Hill essentially says that becoming successful in what you want to achieve, you must first start with an Idea, and back it up with desire and “definiteness of Purpose”.

The thing is – although the book is all about how to become rich – it applies to any dream you have – and that includes getting you to New Zealand. Many migrants find they need to be single minded in their goal to get a new life here. When we first decide to do it – we don’t know how, but we sure as hell found out. We make plans, we set goals, and we stick it out. NZIS likes to put roadblocks in our way – and we jump over them.

The thing that struck me about the final chapters was the 55 Famous Alibis – all of which start with “If only…” You see when we first decided to emigrate – one of the things that got us over the tough days (and there were a few) was the thought that we didn’t want to look back in 20 years, and think “If only we had taken the plunge and done it when we had the chance!”

The 55 Alibis include such beauties as:
If only I had more money …
If only I had a good education …
If only I had time …
If only times were better …
If only I were younger …
If only I had the talent other people had …
If only I could just get started …

If you want to emigrate to New Zealand (or anywhere for that matter) – then do it. The simple fact is that not everyone is allowed to migrate here. Not everyone gets the chance to do it. You may have to get used to jumping through an awful lot of hoops to get it. You may need to redo some education. You may need to change jobs. You may need to save some money. If it is what you want – then make the plans and do what you need to do.

We decided almost six and a half years ago to emigrate here. It took hubby and I two years to get here. By the time my parents arrive next month – it will have been 6 and a half years – and then we still have to sponsor my brother. We are looking at at least 7 years to fulfil our dream of getting the whole family into New Zealand as residents.

But it IS worth it. And we will never have to say to ourselves “If only…”

  2. One of the interesting motivational reminders we had on a regular basis, especially on the bad days were conversations I had at work.
    They ranged either from
“we didn’t think you were coming back [from honeymoon in NZ]”

    through to

“I was going to emigrate to
    Canada
    Greece
    Australia

years ago only we didn’t want to
take the kids out of school that year
disrupt the 11+ exams our eldest was going to have in six months
be away from our parents since they reitred that year

And so on – basically quite a few regrets that 20+ years down the track they hadn’t done it.

Still – as Think & Grow Rich also teaches us – it’s not about waiting to make the right decision – it’s about making the decision right.
