Argghhh – Espressoholic is closing down.
Wellington – known as the coffee capital in New Zealand – has one especially well known coffee hangout: Espressoholic in Courtney Place. It will be closing in a few weeks, despite doing well financially, as the landlord who owns the building has given the company notice.
The owners of Espressoholic have not been told why, and have offered apparently to pay extra rent to be allowed to stay open, but to no avail.
I have actually only been in there a few times: Wellington just has so many cafes to choose from. It is a pretty wacky place – graffiti style decorations on the walls, painted tables and chairs, and it has to be said – damn good coffee.
Best of all – it is open till the early hours of the morning – and we have had cause to make use of that when we lived in the city – as most of the CBD coffee shops close at 5 pm.
This is a real shame.
Interestingly – as I like a bit of balance – not everyone has nice things to say about the service. I guess that can be said about everything though – you just can’t please everyone.

Funnily enough we did visit Expressoholic on our very first trip here. Staying in a central city hotel, and looking for somewhere to get a late night (post 11pm) drink. Everywhere was closed, apart from this place that was dark, slightly studenty, and crowded midweek – a good sign. And with fantastic coffee and cakes you could indeed die for. yum.
